Glycinea R4 carrying the cloned avrD gene also responded hypersensitively to the purified syringolides. Conversely, all cross progeny that were susceptible to R4 carrying the cloned avrD gene were insensitive to the purified elicitors. The number of progeny thus far analyzed (ca. 9! gene is responsible both for elicitor sensitivity and resistance to bacteria expressing avrD [24, N. Keen and R. Buzzell, unpublished observations].
