17 Stieglitz continued to send bulky letters, books and periodicals. 18 Stieglitz’s obsessive mailings are best captured in his gift of the book Faust, which he sent in October 1916. With an intellectual flourish, his words dwell on his precocity, ‘When I was nine I discovered 62 Faust. / It gave me quiet then’, and his fascination with the book that grew with him. ’19 For this precocious, sensitive and increasingly melancholy man educated in German culture, O’Keeffe was becoming his innocent Gretchen, the ‘Eternal Feminine’ of the cursed Faust’s pursuit.

She never saw her parents again. Anita, still living at home in Charlottesville in 1915 aged 25 with her two sisters, Ida and young Claudia, watched as their increasingly ill mother could not afford to feed the boarders. Anita eloped with a college sweetheart, Robert R. Young. Their long marriage together took them to the heights of financial prosperity and wealth, including mansions in Newport and Palm Beach, where they enjoyed a friendship with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor in the 1930s. What remained of O’Keeffe’s immediate family disintegrated when Ida Totto O’Keeffe died in May 1916 in Charlottesville, Virginia.

What I enjoyed was teaching people who had no interest in becoming artists. 15 O’Keeffe’s most visible mark on the West Texas college was her lecture before the faculty in January 1917. When she turned her attention to prepare a lecture on ‘Modern Art – to give it in an interesting 3/4 of an hour to folks who know nothing about any kind of art’, she appears to have had a case of nerves: ‘I have been laboring on Aesthetics–Wright–Bell–De Zayas–Eddy – All I could find . . ’16 She also describes practising a dry run of the talk with a prosecuting attorney educated at Yale: ‘a fair sample of the mind Id [sic] have to tackle in Faculty Circle’.
