The first represents the apex of his career as a writer of short fiction; the second is one of the most fascinating collections of poetry he ever assembled, a work of uncanny power that rivals the poetry of his latest, greatest phase. What makes these two books stand out? Both bring richly polished surfaces into urgent juxtaposition with sexually troubled depths, thus creating examples of what the poet would later call ‘‘terrible beauty’’ (P 180). The Wind Among the Reeds in particular inspires pity and fear, admiration and revulsion: the passing of a century has done little to diminish its capacity for making the hairs on the back of one’s neck stand on end.

While these involve physical contact, they seem to stop short of sexual consummation; apparently reflecting Yeats’s own sexual anxieties, the poem’s speaker wishes to be drowned in a ‘‘deep twilight of rest’’ where he can hide from tormenting impulses.
