The eighteenth century was less fanatically religious and schismatically rent than the seventeenth, but, despite its general distrust of 'enthusiasm', its idle and absentee clergymen, and its political and economic inequalities and shortcomings, England was still alive to Christian principles, especially in the country. Shortly afterwards she was compelled to give up Sanditon, after working on it about two months. The cause of Jane's decline was not diagnosed. 1 Her health had been failing for some time; when she discontinued Sanditon she had not been well for many weeks, and was afflicted with 'a good deal of fever at times, and indifferent nights'.
